On the flip side

I don't agree with this either...

Hindu leaders slam yoga for Christians.

I know what I wrote last year but now it seems the shoe is on the other foot.

Here's my philosphy.....Whatever works! It's ok to acknowledge Yoga's eastern history and foundation but if you don't choose to believe in it, what is the problem? I am more offended if I see my yoga teacher at a bar drunk out of her mind flirting with a bunch of guys and acting like a complete ass. That offends me more than what religion she chooses to follow. Enough already.

We spend a lot of time adding unnecessary drama and meaning to things, don't we?

We, meaning human beings.

Whilst I totally disagree with the concept of "Christianising" yoga, yoga practice enhances any religious or spritual beliefs that you hold by its meditative quality and is goes hand in hand with belief in the Divine (whatever your denomintion).

Or indeed if you have no denomination at all...

Yoga itself is not a religion and does not require religious practice. However most people don't agree with me. *shrugs*

Sheesh...

Great post!
Just doing teh yoga is enough, we should quit with all the extra intellectualising. Let's all go shopping or knit instead!

Great post both times! I think that weaving personal meaning into our practice is what it's all about... and so that might mean praying or chanting, or whatever according to your culture. It's the pretension at exclusiveness, or danger in another's beliefs that grates the nerves. Pray, knit, smile, chant, laugh, cry: it's all offered up, right? I agree, let's just do yoga!

wow, and I thought we Christians were the only beligerant "we know everything" religion. LOL!

My understanding of Yoga is that it is a Philosophy developed by people who happened to be a certain religion. That doesn't mean it is a Hindu thing, any more than this nation being founded by mostly Christian men, but that doesn't make it a Christian Nations. It is a God thing a path to enlightenment and God is not bound by "religion", only we are. And wouldn't it be a better world if more Christians were enlightened rather than judgmental?

Seems true for most people actually. :)

One more point before I shut up. I do wonder why Christians can't just do yoga like it's supposed to be done, but isn't the goal of yoga to calm the mind, and any way that is accomplished is a good thing...RIGHT?

I went to a Christian high school back in the day. They called my friend and her family evil for doing yoga. WTF? Its NOT a religion. I have to agree with Megan, why cant Christians do yoga, or anything for that matter, without feeling the need to weave some deep deep horrible religious meaning into it?

Sheesh.

Great posts.

I am a christian and I love to practice yoga. I spend my savasana in worship as is my whole practice.
