Yoga Diversity

I grabbed the latest issue of Fit Yoga Magazine (July 2007) and it made me think of the issue that came up recently when I posted the Vanity Fair yoga images. Fit Yoga is what Yoga Journal is not. You will not see car ads in that magazine and I see that they do make an effort to show some diversity in their magazine. Even their sponsors aren't as shi-shi. Don't get me wrong, I still like YJ and I enjoy reading the articles, I just over look the ads. Click for larger view...

I have been doing more reading lately about Yoga and the other limbs of yoga. I just want to have a better understanding of it all. I've also been downloading podcasts of Buddhist lectures to listen on the bus ride in to work. I really need to bring myself back to center again. It always got to me how a concept SO simple as Buddha's teachings can be soooo hard to apply. It makes me wonder if I'm mentally capable of following the teachings. The truth is I have a lot of anger still inside me and I'm almost afraid to let some of it go for fear of it making me weak. Crazy huh?

I do enjoy reading YJ too but the ads annoy me as well. I'm paying import/shipping fees for a magazine full of ads? I'll check out FY, thanks.

I think Buddhist concepts can be hard to apply when living in a big City but not so much so, as not to try. I live in Sydney Australia and find that distracting enough. You live in New York (so does my oldest sister) and I hear enough about how crazy and buzzing it is over there. I've also heard from a friend that when she visited David Life and Sharon Gannon in their "out of city" pad, they were so calm and happy but as soon as they travelled back to New York, they were obviously more distracted and a little on edge. Something to be aware of when living in a big city.

I have anger issues as well but I try to think of how best to deal with it and still allow myself to get angry when I need too. I reckon it's about finding your balance and you'll notice that you probably get angry less. We can't be happy all the time but it's how we react that we can control. Allow anger as an emotion to arise but don't let it last more than it needs to. That's my take on it.

Marilyn, since you are in NY, I suggest you check out http://www.jewelheart.org. This is a chapter of the sangha of my teacher, Gehlek Rimpoche (he is in Ann Arbor, MI). Rimpoche also does retreats at the Garrison Institute in New York state.

As they say, when the student is ready, the teacher appears.

I have been a student of Buddhism for 30 years. Don't feel like a failure because you still get angry! Even the Dalai Lama gets angry, believe me! He spoke about it when I saw him. We are all works in progress and we all have buddha-nature.

om mani pedme hum!

Hi Marilyn!
I agree, don't be so hard on yourself: all learning comes in waves. Sometimes we are at the crest and all feels right, sometimes we go under for a bit. But we are still riding the wave, still learning.
I agree about Fit Yoga - despite it's name, it is a much more representative magazine. Now if only my copy didn't keep getting lost in the South African postal system...

Hi! I'm the "diverse" yogi featured in the inspiring creativity section of Fit Yoga's July 2007 issue. I also live in NYC but haven't been able to find the July issue on the stands. Where did you pick up your copy? I'm super anxious to check it out!

Hi Francheska! I got my copy at the studio I go to, Levitate Yoga. The editor, Rita Trieger, teaches there and she brings free copies but they go pretty quick. There is this big magazine shop on 8th Ave between 57th & 58th St and I've seen Fit Yoga carried there.
